Apple Releases iOS 6.0.1 to correct bugs, UnTethered Jailbreak Details

Today, ahead of both the iPad mini and 4th generation iPad 4 release, Apple has issued iOS 6.0.1 to correct a number of bugs. Last week, we reported that 6.0.1 was in the carrier testing phase and outlined a number of issues that BGR claimed would be patched in the new firmware.

Their intel was correct, iOS 6.0.1 does indeed address the same issues, which are as follows:

  • A bug that prevents the iPhone 5 from downloading and installing over-the-air iOS updates
  • An issue where horizontal lines may, in some cases, display across the keyboard
  • An error that could cause the LED camera flash to not go off
  • Improves the wireless reliability of iPhone 5 and the 5th generation iPod touch when connected to all encrypted WPA2 WiFi networks
  • Patches the bug that prevents the iPhone from using its cellular network connection in rare instances
  • Consolidates the “Use Cellular Data” toggle for iTunes Match
  • Fixes a bug with iOS’ “Passcode Lock” bug that sometimes allows access to Passbook pass details from lock screen
  • Fixes a bug that affects Exchange meetings

Jailbreak 6.0.1 UnTethered iOS 6.0.1 Information

As of now, the latest jailbreak for iOS 6 is in the form of a Tethered RedSn0w utility for 6.0, which will likely be updated within the next day to include support for iOS 6.0.1. Unfortunately, while the jailbreak utility will function properly with the latest iOS 6 firmwares, it has limited support for the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and the 4th Generation iPod touch. That means newer iOS devices with Apple’s A5, A5X, A6 and A6X processors aren’t included in the jailbreak. The following iOS-based devices will be incompatible with the iOS 6.0.1 jailbreak.

  • iPhone 5
  • iPhone 4S
  • iPad mini
  • iPad 4 - the new A6X-powered iPad
  • iPad 3 - third Generation
  • iPad 2
  • iPod touch 5th Generation

In order for the above devices to be jailbroken, both the iPhone Dev Team and the Chronic Dev Team will need to work on an UnTethered iOS 6.0.1 jailbreak solution, which will require numerous exploits.

Furthermore, it’s unknown whether the latest revisions to the DCMA exemptions, which technically make iPad jailbreaking illegal, will affect whether the developers continue to support Apple’s line of iPad tablets in their jailbreak utilities.
