The Future of Jailbreaking: A5, A5X, A6 and A6X Devices, iOS 6, 6.0.1 Jailbreak News

The Future of Jailbreaking: A5, A5X, A6 and A6X Devices - Today we have some great news to share with our readers regarding the iOS 6, 6.0, evasion 6.0.1 jailbreak status for the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPad 4, iPad 3, iPad mini, iPad 2, iPod touch 5th Generation, as well as the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and the 4th Generation iPod touch.

Although it’s been several days since our last post, the staff at Evasi0n Jailbreak has been working hard on various projects and attempting to bring them to fruition. Taking a break from our long-term plans, we’ve composed this in-depth explanation to provide you (the reader) with insight into where jailbreaking is headed.

Jailbreak iOS 6.0.1 Tethered: Inside Look

First, it’s critical to understand several important aspects of Tethered jailbreaks. Essentially, unlike an UnTethered jailbreak, when an iOS device is jailbroken via a Tethered jailbreak, said device must be booted using a computer to return it to its fully jailbroken state.  Currently, the only jailbreak available for iOS 6 and 6.0.1 is in the form of a Tethered Redsn0w jailbreak utility. Moreover, Redsnow for 6.0.1 only includes support for A4 devices (iPhone 4 and 4th Generation iPod touch), as well as the iPhone 3GS. We frequently receive questions from iOS users wondering why newer devices aren’t supported by RedSn0w and the answer is rather simple.

Tethered jailbreak utilities, like RedSnow rely on hardware vulnerabilities that exploit the iOS-based device’s BootROM. Thankfully, it’s impossible for Apple to patch Tethered jailbreaks without releasing updated hardware. Unfortunately, Redsn0w utilizes George Hotz’s (Geohot) limera1n exploit from 2010. Consequently, Apple has patched the primary Tethered exploit with the release of newer iDevices, limiting it to older iPhone and iPod models.

Furthermore, once Apple stops officially supporting the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and the iPod touch 4th Generation in post-iOS 6 firmwares, jailbreaking will become much less common, unless steps are taken to secure the future of jailbreaking.

The one-time leader of the Chronic Dev Team, p0sixninja, recently announced via Twitter that he’s “working on something bigger” than the iPhone 5 jailbreak. In response to a follower (who asked, “What can be bigger than an iPhone 5 jailbreak?”), p0sixninja revealed his plans. In his solitary state, p0sixninja is reportedly working to once again exploit the BootROM and obtain decryption keys for the A5, A5X, A6 and A6X processors, which power Apple’s iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4, iPad mini and 5th Generation iPod touch on iOS 6, 6.0 and 6.0.1.

In a followup tweet, almost a week later, p0sixninja stated that he’s “working on something to insure jailbreaks will be around for a long time”. Although it’s relatively clear he isn’t developing an UnTethered jailbreak for 6.0.1 and iOS 6, if successful, p0sixninja will secure the future of jailbreaking for all current iOS devices. Once posixninja’s work is complete, the Dev Team will be able to easily update Redsn0w with every new iOS release with support for the newest devices. Needless to say, it will be a great day and will go down in jailbreak history.
