How to Install Cydia On iOS 8 Post Jailbreak 8.1 via Pangu, Can I Get Cydia? Detailed Jailbreak Installation Tutorial - Yesterday was arguably one of the most exciting days in the world of jailbreaking, as the Pangu Team’s second Untethered jailbreak utility was released to the masses: Pangu for iOS 8, which fully support, and jailbreaks, 8.1 on all iPhone, iPad and iPod touch models! However, until earlier today, there was one significant catch - Cydia Substrate, which is essentially the foundation upon which jailbreak developers build tweaks - wasn’t updated to support iOS 8, let alone 8.1. While the team clarified that they ‘rushed’ their tool to ensure that the majority of jailbreakers could take full advantage of this incredible opportunity (we have no clue when Apple will release an updated firmware such as 8.1.1 to patch the vulnerabilities exploited by Pangu for iOS 8) it would have been nice if Pangu had better coordinated their release with Saurik to bundle the utility with an updated version of Cydia. Having said that, with only a day between Pangu’s release and Saurik’s Cydia and subsequent Cydia Substrate, updates, there’s absolutely nothing that warrants complaint. Not only can the public jailbreak 8.1 for the iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 5s, 5c, 5, 4s, iPad Air 2, iPad Air, iPad mini 3, iPad mini 2, the original iPad mini, iPad 4, iPad 3, iPad 2 and the 5th generation iPod touch, but we can now install Cydia with Substrate for the installation of updated tweaks - continue reading past the break for a complete tutorial on installing Cydia post 8.1 Pangu jailbreak!
How To Install Cydia - Can I get Cydia Post Jailbreak 8.1 With Pangu?
Prior to delving into this tutorial, and installing Cydia, your device must be successfully jailbroken on iOS 8 through 8.1 using the latest iteration of Pangu - if you have yet to jailbreak, we strongly advise following our tutorial for all iDevices.
Additionally, while we’ll update our tutorial on Pangu for iOS 8 relatively soon, the below video also highlights instructions for rectifying any potential complications with the new tool (skip to approximately 14:20 into the video to review said instructions).
Now, without further ado, let’s proceed with the following steps, which are required to install Cydia on any jailbroken iPhone, iPod touch or iPad model that running 8.0, 8.0.1 (if you’re on this dreaded firmware, please update to 8.1), 8.0.2 or the latest 8.1 public release.
Cydia Install On iOS 8.1 Post Pangu Jailbreak - Detailed Tutorial!
1. Ensure that your device is jailbroken by following our complete, albeit mostly video-centered, jailbreak 8.1 tutorial. Once jailbroken, ensure that your iOS-based device is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your computer and obtain the Wi-Fi IP address of said iOS device.
- To do so, simply launch the default Settings app, tap the “Wi-Fi” pane, followed by the ‘i’ button to the right of the connected network - take note of the sequence listed in the IP Address field.
2. Launch the Pangu app from your iPhone, iPad or iPod and install OpenSSH; refer to the above video if you’re at all confused by this step.
3. Download and install any SSH program, two of the recommended tools are listed in our download section below, and establish an SSH connection with the following settings:
Host and/or Server field: [Insert your device’s IP address] - acquired in the first step.
Username: root
Password: alpine
4. Once connected via SSH, transfer the two files found in the below download section into the following directory:
private/var/root
- Your SSH client should automatically resolve to the above directory by default, if, for what ever reason, it doesn’t, you’ll be required to manually navigate to it.
5. Depending on your SSH program, you’ll need to get to the interface for command line and execute the following command through the SSH program itself (if you’re confused by this step, refer to the instructions as highlighted during the video):
dpkg --install cydia-lproj_1.1.12_iphoneos-arm.deb cydia_1.1.13_iphoneos-arm.deb
Windows PC users: While the above command will work for most, and is required for Mac users, it’s recommended that you execute the following three commands in sequential order instead.
dpkg -i cydia-lproj_1.1.12_iphoneos-arm.deb
dpkg -i cydia_1.1.13_iphoneos-arm.deb
dpkg -i cydia
6. Manually reboot your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch with its power button. Once your device boots up, launch Cydia, allow the device’s filesystem to reorganize, and the device to respring, slide through the unlock screen, open Cydia again and, finally, search for and install “Cydia Substrate”.
- Important Post-Step: Succeeding every reboot, you’ll be required to respring in order to regain full use of the tweaks you’ll eventually install via Cydia. To do so, simply execute the following command inside your SSH program of choice:
killall backboardd
- [the second ‘d’ in “backboardd” is both intentional and required]
