Latest 6.0.1 UnTethered Jailbreak iOS 6 News Update

Latest 6.0.1 UnTethered Jailbreak iOS 6 News Update - Here at Jailbreaking iOS 6, we receive a countless number of questions from our readers regarding the 6.0.1 UnTethered iOS jailbreak status for Apple’s latest firmware. While there hasn’t been any official news from the members of the iPhone or Chronic Dev Teams recently regarding the development progress of an UnTethered utility, we decided to create a simple guide to assist you, the reader.

What’s a UnTethered 6.0.1 iOS 6 Jailbreak?

There are essentially two types of jailbreak, Tethered and UnTethered. The only noticeable difference to the user between a Tethered iOS 6 jailbreak and an UnTethered jailbreak is that Tethered jailbreaks rely on the assistance of a computer to boot into the device’s fully-functional jailbroken state.

Of course, before we begin, owners of either an iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS or a 4th Generation iPod touch can easily jailbreak 6.0.1 using the latest Tethered (not UnTethered) version of RedSn0w and a simple workaround (instructions available here).

Alternatively, iPhones, iPads and iPod touches that are jailbroken using an UnTethered utility can reboot without the annoyance of plugging the device into a computer and rerunning a certain part of the utility - hence the name “UnTethered”. Although most jailbreakers prefer the UnTethered variety, Tethered jailbreaks are much more common.

Back when George Hotz (more commonly known as Geohot) was fresh on the jailbreak scene, he discovered a form of Tethered vulnerability, dubbed the limera1n exploit, that’s still in use today. In fact, every version of Redsn0w utilizes Geohot’s discovery. Thanks to the nature of the limra1n exploit, when a new firmware is released, e.g. iOS 6.0.1, the iPhone Dev Team can quickly update and release a new version of RedSn0w. However, because the limera1n exploit is hardware-based, Apple has since patched it in their newer iOS-based devices and has also phased out most of the older devices it encompasses.

iOS Jailbreak 6.0.1 UnTethered

As of now, the latest public information regarding the UnTethered jailbreak is in the form of failbreak updates from members of the Dev Teams. Failbreak is simply a term coined by the jailbreak community, which refers to a jailbreak method that relies on an iOS Developer account. Furthermore, if a failbreak happened to be released, it would spark a legal war between Apple and the iOS security hackers.

Last month, planetbeing (a reputable individual who has collaborated with both the iPhone Dev Team and the Chronic Dev Team) announced that he added a kernel exploit to the 6.0.1 failbreak, which allowed him to jailbreak the iPhone 5.

More recently, both Apple’s new iPad mini and the iPad 4 have been jailbroken on 6.0.1, 6.0 by way of the Dev Team’s failbreak method.

…that Tethered jailbreaks rely on the assistance of a computer to boot into the device’s fully-functional jailbroken state… Question: Does this means that I can boot my device without a computer or not? I fully understand that, if it is possible to reboot without a computer, the reboot will startup the device without “the device’s fully-functional jailbroken state”.

    • admin says:

After jailbreaking Tethered with Redsn0w for 6.0.1, you can install the Semi Tether package from a special source inside Cydia. Once you have it installed, you can reboot without using Redsn0w for LIMITED functionality. Then, to regain full functionality, reboot with Redsn0w’s “Boot now” option.
