iOS 7.0.4 Jailbreak Explained: RageBreak Tethered Support And Untethered Details
Why RageBreak Only Jailbreaks 7.0.4 for iPhone 4, UnTethered Details
Over the past week there’s been both a lot of talk and controversy surrounding developer RageMasta’s RageBreak iOS 7.0.4 jailbreak utility, which exclusively supports the iPhone 4. While we’ve written two very in-depth tutorials on RageBreak and 7.0.4, one for Mac OS X users and the other for Windows-based PC users, a number of our readers are still confused as to why the utility can only jailbreak 7.0.4 on the old, almost outdated, iPhone 4. That is, undoubtedly, a very good question which we’ll answer in today’s article, along with reiterating the current iOS 7 UnTethered jailbreak’s development status.
First and foremost, it’s important to understand that RageBreak is based on winocm’s opensn0w tool, a project that utilizes Geohot’s ancient limera1n exploit from 2010.
When famed hacker Geohot released his utility after months of speculation, he essentially revolutionized the world of jailbreaking. Limera1n is based on a bootrom vulnerability that simply couldn’t be patched by Apple, as it functions on the hardware level. Therefore, all supported devices (at the time, in 2010, the latest iPhone, iPad and iPod touch models were powered by A4 processors) were essentially jailbroken for life.
Over time, as Apple began to phase out older iOS-devices with the release of newer ones and updated firmwares, the company stopped supporting the devices that limera1n functioned on. Now, the last device that is exploitable via limera1n that Apple still supports is the iPhone 4. In a sense, RageBreak is nothing new, it’s based on Geohot’s work from 2010 to jailbreak the iPhone 4.
Although RageBreak may seem useless to most, it actually benefits everyone - even future jailbreakers with new devices like the iPhone 5S and the iPad Air. The developers of various packages available in Cydia are now able to better test and upgrade their utilities/add-ons/extensions for iOS 7.
As for the Untethered 7.0.4 jailbreak for all current iOS devices, the eva3rs are currently working on the utility in “stealth mode” to avoid various complications. Looking back, it took the evad3rs from the time Apple released iOS 6 (in September) until February to release the first and only Untethered jailbreak for the firmware. It’s only been just over two months since Apple released iOS 7 and the team is already further along in the development process than they were last December.
Moreover, all the members of the evad3rs have full-time jobs and are creating a utility that will be used by millions for free, in their spare time. It’s astonishing how quickly some turn against the four people who have the power to make an iOS 7 jailbreak a reality.
