Factory Unlock iPhone 5, 4S iOS 6.1.3, Including iPhone 4, 3GS After 6.1.3 Jailbreak - Although the majority of questions we receive at Evasion Jailbreak are related to jailbreaking, iOS 6.1.3, downgrading and our expert jailbreak tutorials, a number of our users often inquire about unlocking their iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, 4 and 3GS models. In this article, we’ll highlight the best type of unlock and how any iPhone model on any baseband, running any firmware, including iOS 6.1.3 can be easily unlocked. Before we begin though, it’s important to realize that unlocking is fundamentally different from jailbreaking in that it allows an iPhone to be used on carriers other than the one it was initially intended for and essentially “locked” to. Although jailbreaks and unlocks can coexist, the two are entirely separate. For the latest on jailbreaking, we recommend reading our recent article on the topic.
Unlock 6.1.3 iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, 4, 3GS - Factory Unlocking
There are, in essence, three different types of iPhone unlock methods: software, hardware and IMEI. The first two, software and hardware, unfortunately have their limitations and only include support for a limited number of basebands and firmwares. In fact, Ultrasn0w (the current software unlock) only includes support for iPhone 4 models with baseband 01.59.00, which means if you’ve updated your iPhone’s firmware since you purchased it, Ultrasn0w will not be capable of unlocking your phone. The only way around that is to have updated via Sn0wbreeze, which preserves the iPhone’s baseband.
Aside from a software unlock, hardware unlock methods (like Gevey SIM) are also limited and simply can’t support the latest basebands of newer iPhone models. The only permanent and “future-proof” type of unlock is through whitelisting an iPhone’s IMEI, which is completely safe and secure.
When an IMEI unlock is performed, essentially the iPhone’s IMEI is submitted to the original carrier’s whitelist database. The unlock process doesn’t affect the iPhone, in a physical sense, and doesn’t affect the phone’s factory warranty. Instead, once the IMEI has been processed through the carrier’s backend system, it should be permanently unlocked, regardless of the firmware and baseband (modem firmware). IMEI unlock solutions even function on every iPhone model, including the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4 and the iPhone 3GS on iOS 6.1.3 or earlier.
As far as which service to go with, we strongly recommend Unlock iPhone 5s IMEI, as they have a reputable track record, relatively cheap prices for AT&T iPhone models and a fast turnaround time.
Important Unlock Prerequisite
Prior to unlocking, your iPhone must be running Apple’s latest version of iOS, which as of writing this article is 6.1.3. Unfortunately, that means if you own a newer iPhone, like the iPhone 5 or the iPhone 4S, you’ll be required to forfeit your evasi0n jailbreak. If you own an iPhone 4 or an iPhone 3GS that’s jailbroken on iOS 6.1.3, it must be restored to a clean, stock install of 6.1.3. Once your iPhone is on iOS 6.1.3, it’s a good idea to initiate a manual backup inside iTunes.
To successfully unlock your iPhone, follow these simple steps:
Step 1: Locate your iPhone’s IMEI by launching iOS’ default Settings app after reviewing the information listed in the “Important Unlock Prerequisite” section of this tutorial. Once inside Settings, tap General, followed by About and scroll down to the bottom until you see the IMEI field - take note of this number listed.
Step 2: Submit your IMEI obtained in the first step to an unlock service of your choice, again, we recommend using UnlockiPhone5sIMEI.
Step 3: Allow approximately 24 hours for the iPhone’s IMEI to be fully processed through both the site’s database and the carrier’s whitelist database; users should receive an email once the unlock has been confirmed. At this point, simply connect the iPhone with an unofficial SIM card installed to a computer and launch iTunes. If the iPhone is on the latest firmware, an unlock message (similar to the one embedded below) should appear - if it doesn’t continue to step 4a.
Step 4a. If iTunes doesn’t display an unlock message within two minutes, a restore is required. After the restore to iOS 6.1.3 is complete, repeat the third step.
Step 4b. At this point, if iTunes still has yet to produce an unlock comfirmation, disconnect the iPhone, insert an active SIM card from the phone’s original carrier, connect to iTunes and wait for standard activation. Once the iPhone has been properly activated, disconnect from the USB cable, eject the SIM and replace it with one from an unofficial carrier, then simply reconnect to iTunes.
If you’re at all confused by the process, we recommend watching iCrackUriDevice’s in-depth video tutorial, which is embedded above for your convenience.
Congratulations, after completing this guide, your iPhone should now be completely unlocked and function across a broader range of cellular networks.
